She laid in her den, fur still bristling, but she quickly fell asleep.
"Rise, Ripplestar." A deep voice rang in her ear, and her head snapped up.
"Hailstar! Watersplash!" She scrambled up, feeling young and fresh as she did when she was an apprentice, eyes glistening with power and pride.
"Ripplestar, you haven't been kind to your Clan. I died proudly, and if you keep this up..." Hailstar slowly shook his head, and Ripplestar's heart sank.
"I'm trying, Hailstar, really, but...Riverheart keeps acting up and Rockshade-"
"Silence!" Hailstar raised his tail. "You are losing a life. Greencough had stricken you, and it was unnoticeable. You should feel much better when you wake, but...remember. Take charge or your Clan." Hailstar's broad voice echoed as he stepped back, and Watersplash stepped forward.
"Yes Hailstar," She dipped her head, her glistening young eyes turning to her former mate and the father of her kits. "Watersplash..." She rested her head on his shoulder, breathing in his scent.
"Ripplestar." He greeted formally, licking her ear and studying her. "Hailstar is right. Your Clan may start to feel abandoned by you. You're making Coldfrost leader." His eyes glinted in pride at the mention of his youngest son. "He will make a fine leader once you are gone, but you aren't. Die known and loved." He nodded briefly before fading with Hailstar.
"Farewell." Ripplestar's eyes teared up as they left her in that spot.
Waking with a jolt, she sat up. She no longer ached, and her fur was yet again glistening, even for her age. Her green gaze was shining as it searched the den, and she stood, her legs no longer wobbly, just stiff from lack of movement. "Four lives left..." She muttered to herself before stretching and padding out with a twitch of her whiskers.
