The Desert Spring is a small shady spring surrounded by a few trees. It is between the Fireclan camp and the border to unexplored territory. Only Fireclan warriors know how to find it since the travel there is quite dangerous. The creatures of the desert visit the spring to quench their thirst, but predators also hunt there.
Dusttail sighed in quiet relief when they near the spring her paws burned slightly despite her toughened pads. Being out in the heat of the day during Greenleaf wasn't exactly the best idea but it needed to be done for more reason than one. The trek had been a mostly uneventful one all things considered and she was a bit impressed with Sorrelpaw for being able to make it out here with her. Cautiously she looked around and scented the air for predators before making her way towards the water to quench her thirst.
The way to the spring was tiring, but Sorrelpaw kept her chin up. She was happy to get away from Waspfang. Dusttail seemed much nicer than him. Sorrelpaw looked around the area while Dusttail drank from the water. There were a few lizards scurrying about. They weren't the most filling prey, but every one would help the clan thrive. They can't be hard to catch. I know I can catch them.
Once she was done lapping up the cool refreshing water Dusttail felt better and stood scanning the area once more, following Sorrelpaw's gaze to the lizards quietly she murmured the the apprentice "If you want to take a shot at catching them go ahead," She smiled and nodded towards the scaly creatures "I am sure you are skilled enough to snag a few of them." After her words of encouragement she quietly padded off in the opposite direction to see what else she could find, every so often glancing on the younger she-cat's direction to simply check that she is alright and to keep an eye out for any dangers. The deputy trusted that the apprentice could mostly take care of herself and watching her every movement would only put unneeded pressure on her.
The sandy brown she-cat crouched low moving quietly through what little shade the trees around the spring provided. She paused every few steps to scent the air, her mouth watering when the scent of hare came to her. A quick glance around the area was all that was needed when she spotted the long eared mammal busying it self among the sparse grass not far from the water. Almost instinctively Dusttail dropped lower into her crouch and carefully placed her paws so she wouldn't make a sound that would alert her prey to her presence. Almost effortlessly she began to close the distance hoping to come in to leaping distance before it even knew she was there though she knew she had the speed to chase it down if she had to but she didn't want to have to do that in this heat when she still needed to catch more. As she inched closer staying down wind of her target she had a couple close calls when something nearby caused the hare to unexpectedly look up but luckily it never spotted her. After what seemed like a longer time than usual she finally got into a range she felt comfortable with being sure that if she leaped she would hit her target. Dusttail bunched her long lean muscular legs beneath her then leaped landing squarely on its back and quickly dispatching it with a bite to the neck. Looking down at the now dead hare she was quite proud of her catch it was a bit larger and more plump than she had expected it to be which meant that it likely live close enough to the spring that it had a rather constant food and water source. After dragging her kill to the shade of a tree and burring it she went back to searching out any other nearby prey, still looking around to check her surroundings and Sorrelpaw every so often.
Sorrelpaw kept her eyes on the lizards. The nearest one was sunbathing on a rock. Sorrelpaw kept flat and out of its sight as she crept on it. Just one jump, one bite. Easy. When she was a mere tail-length away, she leaped onto the rock, catching the lizard in her paws. The apprentice bit the scaly neck, killing it quickly. Yes! Thank Starclan! She looked up to see if Dusttail was watching. The deputy seemed occupied hunting, but Sorrelpaw still felt proud of herself. She hid away the lizard and glanced around for more prey.
Dusttail managed to snag a ground squirrel and a couple deermice before she needed to rest from the heat of the day. She settled in the shade of the tree where she stashed her catch, her jaws parted in an attempt to cool her rising body temperature. Her chartreuse gaze followed Sorrelpaw's movements carefully and discreetly as the younger cat moved about in search of more prey. Her ever vigilant gaze had caught glimpses of the apprentice's earlier hunt and catch of the lizard and the light brown she-cat was quite impressed with her execution of it. She is doing quite well and should be proud of herself. A slight smile briefly crossed her features. If she was my apprentice I would be very pleased with her progress and very proud of her myself. She flicked her tail as her thoughts drifted to the tom that was actually the bright red apprentice's mentor The arrogant piece of crow-food... The deputy quickly pushed the forming thought away before it had a chance to take hold. She didn't want to even think about that right now she was out of camp and enjoying her hunt and wanted to keep it that way, No need for negative thoughts now. She sighed and shifted a little to get more comfortable watching for predators and keeping an eye on Sorrelpaw hoping to fully see her hunt something but not wanting to be too obvious about it and put pressure on her.
Another lizard caught Sorrelpaw's eye. It was drinking from the spring, unaware of the apprentice. She crept towards it, making sure to be silent. As soon as it looked up, Sorrelpaw pounced on it. It tried to snap at her, but she quickly killed it. She carried to her other lizard. Maybe one more. I'm getting really tired and hot. The sun was making her red pelt very warm. She managed to catch a small rabbit using a well executed crouch and leap. She was disappoint with the small size, but it was better than nothing. Sorrelpaw looked around for Dusttail, hoping to go back to camp soon with their prey.
The deputy watched the apprentice carefully and nodded in approval when Sorrelpaw caught another lizard and the small rabbit. She stood when she saw the apprentice looking around and she assumed it was for her. The lithe she-cat made her way over to the apprentice leaving her own catch in its hiding spot for now. She purred when she reached the younger cat "Well done Sorrelpaw." She glanced around quickly then motioned to the shaded spot she was just in "Why don't we rest in the shade for a bit you must be burning your pelt off in this heat. We will head back after that." She padded back over to her previous spot motioning with her tail for the apprentice to follow.
The deputy's advice was taken without question. Sorrelpaw followed her to a shady area and laid down. The cool ground felt refreshing on her paws and pelt. She smiled at Dusttail. "Thank you for taking me out to hunt." Her dark green eyes seemed a little brighter than before. Sorrelpaw didn't know what else to say that could express how thankful she was to get away from Waspfang.

Dusttail settled down already mostly cool since she had been resting for a little bit already. She smiled when Sorrelpaw thanked her her light green gaze warming when she realized that taking the apprentice out had done the trick and cheered her up a bit. "It was my pleasure, it is always nice not to be out hunting alone." The deputy sat quietly for a moment and watched the subtle movements of the other creatures in the area. Now that they had stopped hunting lizards were once more emerging to bask on the rocks and a few mammals that she couldn't identify in the distance were coming in to have a drink from the spring. Her thoughts drifted as she watched the area around them. Rather suddenly she spoke "You know you are turning into a fine hunter right? I realize that Waspfang hasn't said that but then again I grew up around the same time as him and I know how he can be..." She sighed and flicked her tail then continued "Don't let him make you doubt yourself, okay?" She had continued to stare out into the distance as she spoke but turned her gaze to the young she-cat when she finished speaking.
Sorrelpaw looked at the ground, away from Dusttail. She appreciated Dusttail's kind words, but soon they would return to camp and Waspfang would be there. Sorrelpaw knew that he would probably criticize her hunting skills. That made her feel even worse. She lifted her head when the deputy finished talking. Her eyes met Dusttail's. She's right. I have to trust myself and my abilities. I still have a lot to learn, so obviously I'm not perfect. But I can't doubt myself because of Waspfang. The apprentice nodded to the she-cat. "I'll try not to. It's hard sometimes, but I'll try."
Dusttail nodded knowing it would be hard for the apprentice to stay confident if her mentor was constantly pointing out only the wrong and nothing right. She sighed feeling some pity for Sorrelpaw knowing that if she had a different mentor she wouldn't be suffering so much. "Just stay strong no matter what he says and only take his remarks as motivation to improve, you still have a long path ahead of you." The deputy glanced up at the sky and noticed how far the sun had moved across the blue expanse. "Sadly we should probably be heading back with our catch, are you rested up enough? Who knows what Waspfang has planed for you for when we get back." Her thoughts drifted to the tom and how she imagined him not being particularly happy with her for taking his apprentice out Well he is just going to have to deal with it. She flicked her long tail and chuckled but didn't voice her thoughts.
She stood and shook out her short sandy brown coat then dipped into a deep stretch before straightening out into her normal stance. Unlike the prideful Waspfang she didn't constantly have to have her head and tail up high, she didn't feel the need to prove anything and didn't feel like she was above anyone despite her rank. She was honored to have been chosen deputy and didn't lord it over anyone. Her stance reflected that, or at least it did around her clanmates, she stood relaxed and just rather at ease looking. Her chartreuse gaze scanned the area for dangers once more before she turned her gaze back to Sorrelpaw waiting for her answer on if she was rested or ready to head back, she was willing to wait if the younger she-cat wasn't up for the trek back yet.
Sorrelpaw nodded. "I'm ready." She got onto her feet and picked up her catches of the day. As they traveled back, Sorrelpaw thought about what Dusttail had told her. I got to be strong. If I keep trying, I'll become a warrior soon enough and not have to worry about Waspfang bothering me. Her head was held up high in confidence as she entered camp. {Cont. Clearing}
Dusttail nodded digging up her catches from near the roots of the tree they had found shade under, once she got a good grip on each piece she lifted her head as high as she comfortably could trying her best not to drag the large hare too much. This is going to be a long walk.... She flicked her tail and nodded to Sorrelpaw and headed off towards camp making the trek a bit slower than when they had came since they were now loaded down with prey.
