The apprentice felt a pang of disappointment at "fine". She thought she was doing well. Then again, Sorrelpaw remembered hearing from the other apprentices that Waspfang was a really tough warrior. This didn't stop her from trying her best to impress him. She put her nose into the air once more to take in the smells. The hare's scent was still in the area, but getting farther away. "I can barely smell it now."
He looked at her with a sort of judgement, as if it were her fault the hare had disappeared. "Perhaps if you'd hunted faster as I did, we could have caught it." Waspfang's eyes flickered to the sky, and he realized how hard the sun was now beating down on the territory.
"It's much too hot to find anything but adders here, now," he shook his head and lashed his tail, turning. "Choose another place to hunt, we haven't caught enough yet. It would be embarrassing to show up with this."
Sorrelpaw felt as crushed as a robin egg in a storm. She had let her mentor- no, her clan, down! What would they all think of her? She hid her guilt as best as she could by keeping her chin and tail up. "I guess we can go to the Shining Stream. It's cooler there and there should be more prey." Sorrelpaw almost asked if they could go back to camp, but that would make Waspfang even more disappointed.
"I suppose that will have to do," he turned back to her, narrowing his eyes. "Come on, now." He started there, twitching his whiskers carelessly but also keeping his ears pricked for any sounds. I told Blazestar not to give me a she-cat apprentice, he thought to himself, his paws angrily kicking up dust.
She-cats can't handle themselves. If I weren't here, Sorrelpaw would return in shame. He glanced back at her, turning back and letting out an exasperated sigh of disappointment. She-cats are built to be mothers, not warriors. His mind turned to Dusttail, and he felt a pang of something akin to rage in him.
He would make a better deputy than her any day, she should be in the nursery, helping the queens or caring for kits of her own. The Clan needed more toms to be warriors, they were dwindling on real warriors.
Amberpool made her way up to the Plains, her belly brushing the ground as her lithe figure slithered through the sand. Her coppery gaze was focused upwards at a smudge in the sky. Amberpool's stomach lurched somewhat at the faint scent of coyote. It was rather stale but none-the-less present, and she pushed the feeling away a little while still being cautious.
She would not admit, even to herself, that she was intimidated by anything. She let the sand become strewn throughout her shining pelt, which dulled it and helped her blend into the plains, as she flattened her body to the ground. Faint pawprints dotted the reddish surface, and from the musty scent and sizing she knew them to belong to Waspfang and Sorrelpaw from their previous hunting trip.
She dragged her gaze from the ground and back to the sky. The smudge was indeed a hawk or a buzzard, flying lower and lower as it scoured for prey. Perhaps it was rather lizard-brained of her to be by herself here with multiple threats present, but she found it difficult to care at this point. The hawk was lower now, gliding along the ground with its talons extended just a relatively short distance ahead of her.
Luckily the feathered creature hadn't noticed Amberpool at this point, as it had its back turned to her and was entirely focused on its meal. The scent of a roadrunner reached her nostrils. That's what it wants, huh? Amberpool raised her body up slightly to stalk through the sand. The small hawks glinting talons reached for the roadrunner, and Amberpool had the ambition to go for both.
Then she leaped. Amberpool crashed into the bird, causing them both to fall a short distance to the ground, crushing the roadrunner below. A caucus of squawking and screeching followed as Amberpool pinned the hawk to the ground. She let out a yowl of triumph as she swiftly delivered the killing bite. With a few heaves of adrenalin fueled breaths, she did the same to the winded roadrunner.
Sagepool's head shot up from her spot under a shady tree, rising to her small paws she shook the sand out of her pelt before heading towards the sound seeing Amberpool just in time to see her kill the road runner. With a head tilt she drew closer. "That what you happy about? Killing a road runner?" she asked a bit of sarcasm lacing her words as she spoke to her. The long tail flicking behind her, her audits perked up listening incase she heard anything.
On her travels from the border to here she had smelt the distinct smell of coyote. She knew it was old but she thought she caught a fresh scent closer to the boarder then again it could of been that fox dung clan known as stormclan. Just thinking of them made her pelt prickle and her teeth wanting to bite. Shaking her head she returned her attention to Amberpool.
Amberpool looked up from her kill, smirking and shaking the sand from her pelt.
"I'm happy about getting any significant prey." She puffed out her chest with pride and triumph as she surveyed her prey. It was short lived, though, as once again came the scent of coyote. "We should probably check out that foul scent at some point."
Sagepool flicked her tail behind her as she looked at Amberpool. "That may be true, I managed a few mice earlier but most are scarce especially with the heat it be better to hunt at night for small prey." she said though she knew the risk about that. She nodded agreeing. "Go hide the road runner and we can go check it out?" she suggested
