This is a large strip of bare land. There are no trees and the sun scorches your pelt here, Espically at Sun-high. This is a good area to hunt for roadrunners and other small animals, and just to stretch your legs. But beware of hawks and buzzards, which roam around here. Coyotes are sometimes seen here also.
The rising sun was already heating up the plains. The ground felt warm under Sorrelpaw's feet, but it could easily become burning hot. The duo had arrived at a good time for hunting. Sorrelpaw could smell some prey already. She stopped to look at her mentor for guidance on what to do next.

Waspfang lifted his head, enjoying the sun on his face before looking back to Sorrelpaw. "Tell me what you can smell here," he said, opening his jaws and drinking in the air. "Be thorough, and when you know everything that's nearby, I want to know what you think you should hunt."
He now sat, his tail curled neatly over his paws as he looked down at her. His bright eyes were glazed and unreadable, but he was feeling competitive. He would definitely put her to the test today, although he was feeling generous. He would be kinder, as well.
She stuck her nose into the air and inhaled deeply. There was a faint wind that brought the smell of a roadrunner and a hare with it. Sorrelpaw faced the other direction to try to scent other animals. She thought she smelled a lizard, but it seemed faint. There was also a stale coyote scent on a nearby stone. The thought of encountering a coyote made her hair stand a little in excitement and fear. Sorrelpaw looked at her mentor. "We're downwind of a roadrunner and a hare. But we're also upwind of a lizard." She gestured to the nearby stone with her tail. "And I think there was a coyote here, but not recently." Her green eyes stared at him, hoping that she had done well.

He gave a very faint nod of approval, his fur prickling. He hadn't even smelled the coyote, the scent must have been too stale for him to pick up on. He was never a great hunter - nor a great fighter. He tended to be better using his sharp words and wit than his claws or nose. "Very good, which one seems like the prey you are most likely to catch?"
His gaze, no matter how much he tried to hold eye contact with his apprentice, kept flickering toward the stone. Perhaps he was worried, since he could only match an average warrior's strength and in no way ever fend off a coyote. It would be much larger than him and Sorrelpaw. And now his mind began racing. What about Sorrelpaw? She surely couldn't fight a coyote, they hadn't even done much battle training. She was only 6 moons, she'd become an apprentice so recently.
He became protective. Was it not a tom's job to defend a she-cat? He kept a calm composure, taking a shallow breath and allowing his ears to turn toward the stone, but now keeping his eyes on his apprentice.
Sorrelpaw failed to see her mentor's nervous looks. She was too proud of the fact that he praised her. "The roadrunner or hare. They won't see us coming," she replied confidently. "Both are pretty fast, but if we can sneak up on them, we can catch'em!" Her voice was full of excitement again.

His eyes shone with a bit of challenge, and he gave a short, brief purr. "I'd like you to catch the roadrunner." He knew that young apprentices generally had trouble with prey such as the swift bird, but he and Sorrelpaw had practically only been hunting. Battle training happened infrequently, as food was needed to keep the Clan's energy up.
"Okay!" She could hardly contain her energy. This was to be an interesting hunt, hopefully a successful one. The she-cat started walking quietly towards the smell of the roadrunner. As she followed the smell, she began creeping on the ground to stay undetected. Sorrelpaw stopped as the roadrunner came into view. It was preoccupied with eating a lizard, unaware of the warriors downwind of it.

He watched his apprentice closely, making sure to note any flaws and strengths. She would definitely need to work on her tail and keeping it still behind her, as she was twitching it all too much. His head raised as she got further away, and he kept perfectly still, sitting as still as a tree with his long tail wrapped over his paws.
Her tail flicked behind her as she anticipated how this would go. I can catch it when it is in the middle of eating, giving it less time to react. Or, I can just run for it now! I'm fast enough! Her hind legs rose for a moment, but she quickly laid back down. The roadrunner looked up, but didn't detect her. No! I have to be patient! She crept a little closer, keeping low. The smell of the dead lizard and the living roadrunner were starting to get to Sorrelpaw. Her tongue ran over her mouth in hunger. Now! As the road runner picked up the lizard's last leg, the apprentice sprinted forward and when she was close enough she leaped onto the bird. It only had moved a few steps before it was caught under the small, but sharp claws. Sorrelpaw quickly bite the neck and snapped it. She had to remind herself not to eat the prey right away, like a rogue cat. The she-cat smiled at her clanmate. "Look! I did it Waspfang!" She meowed proudly to her mentor.

He looked over the prey, studying it. "You left a couple claw marks, you need to be more careful. Otherwise, I suppose it's a clean kill." His voice was not impressed, but he gave her an approving flick of his tail. "Keep patient, always remember that. I saw you almost move too early. Also, watch your tail movement."
He glided to where the roadrunner had been picking at the lizard to see if the crowfood was salvageable. We can't be picky, he reminded himself, although the thought of eating it was disgusting to him. Our Clan definitely needs anything it can get its paws on.
Sadly, he realized it was nothing but bone and skin. "Foxdung!" He muttered under his breath, turning back to Sorrelpaw. "At least we have something. Can you smell anything else?"
His praise, as adequate as it was, gave Sorrelpaw some pride. When he commented on her tail, she held it stiff and tried to not forget the advice for later. At his question, she took in another breath. The roadrunner scent was strong, but she searched for other prey. The hare from earlier was not far off. It had probably heard the cats and moved away. She could try to find it, but there was never any guarantee she could catch it. And that coyote smell, it still lingered. It made the young apprentice nervous. "There's a hare not far from here. But it may know that we are nearby." She looked to Waspfang for guidance.

He shook his head, looking out farther. His eyes locked onto some small movement, and he crept forward slowly, his slim figure slithering toward it. While he kept low and steady, he also moved very quickly, afraid it would spot him in the more open territory due to his black markings - which stood out.
A rock squirrel, unable to be detected by scent due to how extremely dusty it kept its fur naturally to ward off predators. He moved slower, his bright eyes locked onto it in complete focus. Finally he pounced forward, pinning it down with his paws and, instead of killing it, picking it up by its tail. He watched it squirm wildly, narrowing his eyes and trotting over to Sorrelpaw.
He pinned it under his paw again, meeting her gaze calmly. "Kill it. Cleanly." He scooted it near her, but did not lift his paw until she would take it.
She looked surprised at his sudden actions, but she nodded and took the squirrel from him. She held it tightly under her paw, feeling it squirm and try to escape. The apprentice reflected on how she hunted earlier, feeling stupid for not acting more like a warrior. Sorrelpaw bent down and cleanly bit the prey's neck. The creature stopped moving and fell limp. She looked up at Waspfang and hoped that she was pleasing him. "Was that right, Waspfang?"
He pulled it back over to him, looking it over and rolling it gently to check it. "It's fine," he said blandly, moving to put it next to the roadrunner. "Any chance you still smell that hare around here?"
