He stared at her for a few more heartbeats, still infuriated, and gave her a hard tap with his paw on her flank. "Well, get moving!" He snapped, whipping around and stalking ahead of her. He felt his pelt prickle as he walked, and didn't bother to force it to settle. Mousebrained kit! He snarled to himself, glancing back at her with a moue of malevolence.
"And when I check Copperwhisker's nest," he continued, slowing down a bit to drag his claws over a stone as he passed it in anger, leaving white streaks. The sound seemed to calm him, and his ears turned sideways, although his tone did not let up. "It better be absolutely perfect! I don't want to see one flaw! And no matter what any cat says, be it Copperwhisker, herself, Blazestar, or Dusttail," he made sure to spit out the deputy's name. "I want it done before you rest and before you eat."
She hurried along behind him, not wanting to be left behind. His gaze was unbearable. She hated seeing it, but her mind wouldn't let her forget it. Sorrelpaw flinched when Waspfang scraped his claws on the rock. It sounded awful. "As you say, Waspfang." The apprentice made sure to reply in a timely manner, hoping to not make things worse. {Cont. Clearing}
Although the older apprentice was upset his friend would not join in this training, Flamepaw quickly gathered himself, excitement flooding him once again. Training was always wonderful with Ryeleaf, learning new battle techniques was a favourite. Reaching the training grounds, the fiery pelted tom sat paitently in the centre, awaiting Ryeleaf's commands.
The short built she cat sat before her apprentice 'what would you like to do first?' She offered the tom a choice for once. She knew he was bummed out, and decided they'd start with whatever he prefered to Do. She liked her shoulder to readjust her fur while she awaited his response.
Flamepaw was surprised of this choice, and debated his options in his head. Fighting was always his favourite, and new battle techniques always gave him thrill. Sighing, he knew however, the pile did need filling, and his hunting skills needed improving.
"I think we should do hunting.." he mewed, hopeful a few mice would be out today. It was hot, but since it was later in the day, it had started to cool down. Bringing back fresh prey in time for nightfall would surely make the clan happy.
The large she cat nodded, smiling down at FlamePaw 'very well... show me what you know' she insisted, nudging the tom up to his feet. She was a very patient cat, and she did her best to make training as easy and fun as she could, but even the warrior knew it wasn't always able to be that way.
Flamepaw nodded curtly, still bothered on the way Foxpaw was treated by hos own mentor. He longed for his friend to train with Ryeleaf and himself, knowing the shy tom would be defeated by the end of the day. Digging his claws into the sandy ground, he bound off swiftly, maw parted to detect any prey.
He rounded through the blistering heat silently, creeping against the humid stones that towered over him. Ears against his skull in silent anger. Slowing, he caught the scent of a ground squirel, sharp clicking of its nails to his left. Lowering his body to skim the sand, he crept forward, eyes narrowed as he saw the creature. He tried to remember his teachings, pawing over dry twigs and stopping as it looked up.
Now being about a foxlength away, the apprentice let his excitement get the better of him, sprinting forward with his claws out. The squirel caught on quick, bounding away and into its den in the rocks, safely tucked. Flamepaw huffed, turning shamefully to his mentor.
The short she had followed him silently, watching his every move carefully. Her eyes taking in every falter he possibly made. She nodded as he turned back to her, nodding quietly at him. 'You did well, don't think you didnt' she assured him 'would you like to try again before or after I correct you?' She offered, watching him carefully.
The larger apprentice thought to himself, perhaps some feedback would be best before he continued. It would be better to start applying these suggestions sooner rather than later. "If its alright with you, I would like the feedback before" He replied, curling his stripped tail around his body as he awaited her feedback.
He knew his ending was bad, not always being the most patient hunter. Perhaps there was some stepping he missed as well. His large ears flickered, hearing the squeaking and scratches of what sounded like a family of squirrels. He imagined they were snickering about his tactics, making the rambunctious tom chuckle lightly. He wished his friend was here to share these jokes with him.
The young warrior nodded and sat back on her hunched lightly. watch your stance. Stay as low as you can, and try to remain flat. Your tail, it puffs up, your excitement rages through your body. You need to breath. Take it easy. And your final move, you want to be a bit closer, so you won't waste your energy on the pounce. This will be needed for larger prey, and even fighting. Don't waste energy initiating. Use it when you need it, to kill prey, or injure a foe. Always stay relaxed. Like us, the prey can sense the energy. she stated, trying to keep her words light to not bog down the apprentice. She wanted him to enjoy training like she once did, and to do so he had to accept criticism.
Flamepaw nodded steadily, taking in his mentor's words and making notes to himself. He knew there would be a lot to work on, espiecally with hunting being a weaker point in his training. "Thank you Ryeleaf, I'll try again" the large apprentice took off silently, maw parted to trace any prey that may have come out during their chat.
Twisting around boulders, the tom froze, ears twitching t the scratching of a mouse, dead ahead. Lowering his body slowly, he kept his tail low, alert for any movements. He kept his mentor's words in mind, keeping it slow and steady, artfully stepping over any twigs or rocks on his way. Some wind was picking up, thankfully towards him, so he knew the mouse would find it harder to trace his scent.
Getting into the view point of the creature, he slowly crept forward, slowing his excitement not to scare this one off. He carefully extended his claws, putting his weight onto his hunches. The mouse started digging the sand, and Flamepaw pounced, catching the squirming prey and quickly biting its tender neck before it could warn other prey with its squeal. Panting, the apprentice grinned, trotting over to his mentor pridefully. He knew it was a small catch, but he was certainly ready to catch more
RyeLeaf watched carefully, again silently following him to assess his movements. She purred softly and nudged the apprentice at his catch and nodded Very good! That was beautifully done, FlamePaw she cooed sweetly. He was her first apprentice for quite some time, and she was very proud of how far he was coming in the little bits of training they'd done together.
Now, you've taken my notes, and you did not hesitate. I'm very proud of you. Here's the true challenge. I'm going to sit right here, and you will hunt without me there to watch. If you mess up, think of your Possible mistakes. When you've successfully captured three prey items, return here to me. Extra points if you can catch a bird, as they are a little more difficult. she watched the apprentice. She wanted to see how long he'd take to return with the set amount of kill, to see if the pair should continue vigorous catch and assessment technique.
Flamepaw nodded, purring delightedly at his mentor's praise "Thank you Ryeleaf!" he exclaimed burying his first catch quickly and needing the dusty ground. As Ryeleaf proposed her new training idea. Nodding tentatively, the fiery tom grew nervous, his first solo hunt making the apprentice scared he wouldn't catch enough prey quick. He curled his tail around his paws, planning out his strategy as his mentor finished up her talk. "I'll do my best Ryeleaf!" he announced, bursting off silently in the boiling grounds.
Parting his maw once again, he tried to slow his heartbeat as he skimmed the humid boulders. The sickly heat was cooling, as sunset would be around soon, so he knew he would have to work a little quicker than usual. He hoped to catch his first bird, and a plump squirrel. Finishing his thought, he detected an earthy and mild scent, sweet chirping hung in the air. Perfect! he thought, praying to Starclan he could catch this finch with ease. Rounding through the sandy desert, he perked up, glancing at a nearby finch pecking the ground, back turned on the apprentice. Easing forward, the fiery tom slunk down, tail lowered and eyes slit, focusing his energy on the task at hand. Stalking forward, he unsheathed his claws, ears pinned as he used a bush for cover. Once he felt safe, the tom shot out of his hiding place, noticing the bird started to fly up. He quickly sprung into the air digging his claws into its feathery pelt, bringing the squirming creature down with ease. Snapping its small neck, he grinned, proud he was getting better at hunting. Burying his first prize, he set off once more, a sense of pride feeling him.
After a few failed attempts at some mice, the apprentice was frustrated, ears pinned to his head as he stopped, taking a few breaths to focus once again, not letting his frustration stop him. He reviewed what he had done wrong. Perhaps I need to get a bit closer, and wait until the prey is distracted or turned... he thought, nodding and setting off once again, using his bird catch excitement to fuel him.
After catching a rather plump squirrel, Flamepaw had a new sense of adrenaline, quickly detecting another mouse nearby. This was his chance to catch another, since all of those had escaped from him earlier. sprinting stealthily to its destination, he went through the hunting movements with ease, finally getting the hang of the process. He awaited the mouse to dig in the ground, quietly pouncing, and landing on its tender neck, snapping it. The tom grinned, taking his last catch and heading to his others, quickly digging them up and sprinting to his mentor, hoping he didn't take too long.
She awaited the young apprentice, laying over where FlamePaw had hid his first catch to keep it protected from any lurking thieves. She relaxed easily, letting her ears listen for the apprentice. She heard as he grew frustrated and his steps grew heavy. She shook her head for a quick moment, and then relaxed again.
RyeLeaf quickly stood, hearing the tired steps of her apprentice. She purred quietly and nodded Very good, FlamePaw. You caught a finch, what a lovely job. I'm very proud. she dug at the earth, pushing the next three kills into the hole with the first before again packing them down with dirt to cover them.
Now before I tell you what I noticed, you tell me what happened, good parts and bad. she nodded. RyeLeaf licked her apprentice's head, her ears locked intensely on him, awaiting his first story of being our alone.
Flamepaw panted into the grounds he and Ryeleaf were, watching as his mentor got to her paws to welcome him. Dropping his prizes proudly, he purred, feeling accomplished from where he had come. He remembered the first hunt he had gone on, having to eventually return with no kill to show and a heavy heart. Mice were especially tricky for them, his patience usually running low having to be extra careful around the small creatures.
Dipping his head to Ryeleaf he sat on his haunches, watching as she buried his catch with his first mouse. "Thank you Ryeleaf, its thanks to you" he purred, wrapping his stripped tail around his paws for her next instructions. Listening as she asked his viewpoint on the hunt, he tilted his head in thought, before answering confidently "I think the first catch went well, as the finch required a fast-paced kill to catch it, something I'm stronger at. But, I do think the ouse situation could have went over better, I let my frustration get the better of me.." he ended, pawing at the sandy ground at the thought.
