This is the Training Hollow, which is towards the center of Fireclan Territory. This is where mentors train their apprentices. The Hollow is a clearing surrounded by trees and is coated with a layer of sand.
Waspfang stopped as he reached the area, enjoying the cool, stretched shadow of a tree as he waited for Sorrelpaw. He allowed himself to yawn, as he had been in the sun for a good portion of the day. His bright eyes scanned the area as he took in his surroundings, thinking over training techniques.
The red she-cat stepped into the cool clearing. It was refreshing to be under the shade of trees after a day in the sun. Sorrelpaw noticed that even Waspfang seemed to relax a little. The apprentice stood near the middle of the clearing, awaiting her mentor's lesson.
He drew in a slow breath, looking her over and then moving toward her in a slow fashion, making a wide circle around her. "Let's begin with the simplest thing," he crouched low, wriggling his shoulders and lowering his head to just above his paws, lashing his tail about behind him. "This is an aggressive position. When an opponent moves into this, you should be ready to fight." He sat back up, swiping his tongue over his jaws. He still hadn't eaten, but he could wait.
He sheathed his claws, which he had just noticed were still prickling into the ground, and brought his paw hard down over her head, but stopped it just before making the blow. He leaned in again close to her, smirking. "That's a front paw blow. You hit your opponent's head as hard as you can with your paw." He brought it back from over her, licking it quickly to smooth down the ruffled hairs on it and setting it back down. "The general rule is to keep your claws sheathed, but I find it to be more effective if you rake your claws across your enemy's muzzle." His eyes glistened with a sort of mischief, but the rest of his body language was calm and collected. "It's also much more satisfying."
As Waspfang talked, Sorrelpaw nodded along, focusing on his instruction. Her heart skipped a beat when he nearly hit her. He's toying with me again. Sorrelpaw tried not to look scared but her wide eyes have it away. She was surprised when he mentioned unsheathing his claws in battle. In real battle, it was usually necessary, but often considered cruel if misused. The apprentice kept watching her mentor carefully.
He now turned his back toward her, lashing out with his back legs and missing her muzzle by a whisker. "That's a back kick. Now I want you to show me both the front paw blow and the back kick, alright?" He snaked his tail about behind him, his eyes narrowed as he looked to her now.
"They're very simple. I am hoping you can handle them." Waspfang's whiskers twitched in slight impatience - as if she'd already gotten it wrong and he had to show her again. "Just swipe at the air, next time I'll make sure there's another apprentice for you to train with."
"Alright." The apprentice nodded. The techniques seemed easy enough to do. Waspfang displayed them well, even though he almost hit her again. Sorrelpaw lowered into a crouch like Waspfang had. In a flash she raised her paw and brought it quickly down as if hitting an opponent. Without waiting for approval, she quickly turned around for the back kick move. This was harder for her. She kicked back with her legs, but had trouble keeping her balance. The kicks were much weaker than her front blow. Sorrelpaw looked over her shoulder at Waspfang, her ears slightly pulled back in shame. He's disappointed. I messed up again.
His ears turned to the side as his lips drew back in a short expression of great disappointment, eyes flashing almost angrily. But soon all of these signs disappeared, and he twitched his nose. "The front paw blow was... Nothing to brag about," he looked to the sky and silently asked StarClan to give him patience. "I believe we both know the back kick needs more work. Why don't you try it on me? Perhaps having a target will help."
He moved closer to her, now sitting and lifting his head again with a sort of expectant wince. It was possible she would hit him by mistake, but she was only an apprentice. It couldn't hurt too bad, and maybe she would surprise him? He laughed at him very quietly at this. She never surprised him.
At least he's being polite. But he's right about my kick. She didn't like the look of disappointment that he had shown. She knew it was a fair reason though. "I'll try not to hit you," she replied in a soft voice. Sorrelpaw didn't want to hurt him, but part of her felt like getting vengeance. The she-cat looked back at Waspfang, trying to remember where his head was before she turned away. Sorrelpaw tried to get into a better stance so her legs wouldn't slip as she kicked. Just stop before you hit him. Sorrelpaw took in a quick breath and swiftly kicked the air behind her. She stopped the kick when thought she would hit her mentor. It had stopped right under his chin. Sorrelpaw let out a sigh of relief.
He had a calm expression, and was truly relieved that she hadn't hit him as he'd expected, but was too prideful to say he had been worried in this first place. He gave a swift nod, flicking his tail and turning back to sit in the shadows. "That was better, but not something I'd send you to battle with."
He now looked toward a rock in the distance, motioning to it with his tail. "Go to that rock and run back to me as swiftly as possible."Speed is something all of us in FireClan must have, he now let out a snort of amusement to himself. Even the she-cats.
Sorrelpaw smiled a little at Waspfang's comment. He was being nicer than usual. When he mentioned running, her smile disappeared. Running? That's something I have to train for? I'm not a kit! Sorrelpaw respectfully nodded to her mentor. She spotted the rock Waspfang pointed out and eyed it. Pretend it's prey and only slow down to turn. The apprentice took off in a flash, letting dust fly behind her. Like most Fireclan cats, her body was agile and quick. Sorrelpaw sprinted to the rock and when she reached it, pounced off it to turn around. Waspfang was her new target. The she-cat sprinted to him. She nearly forgot to stop, causing her to nearly slide into Waspfang. Sorrelpaw ended up stopping right in front of Waspfang. Her green eyes looked up at him intently. "Was that good, Waspfang?"
He twitched his whiskers in a sort of amusement, although he kept expressionless. "I will praise you for your speed," he sighed nonchalantly, "You're faster than some other cats of FireClan I know." His inequity toward her had dissipated for the time being, he took training very seriously. It would be going against Blazestar's word not to train Sorrelpaw just as he would train any tom apprentice, and while he occasionally did not agree with his leader's thoughts - such as when he chose Dusttail as deputy - he still respected it. He now kept his head low as he moved back into the sun, in a sort of gliding prowl, in which his shoulders rose higher and his tail followed behind lazily. It was much too hot today, especially directly in the heat of the sun's light.
He moved a good distance from her, partially unsheathing his claws again so he could get better traction, and bolted toward her, his very skinny figure and long limbs practically built for speed. He collected himself as he neared her, leaped over her, then spun behind her and grabbed her tail in his jaws lightly, pulling without much force at all. "That's called the tail yank, I have decided to teach you the moves that are more dependent on speed and agility. It will confuse your opponent if you leap over them, they will obviously turn around, which gives you time to get their tail." He motioned to where he had been standing, shaking out his pelt since he'd kicked sand into it. "Go over there and run at me, I want you to use this move. I won't fight back, you're just learning the basics for now."
Her tail wriggled in excitement. Sorrelpaw could hardly believe that Waspfang praised her. Maybe I'm actually doing well enough for him. I can't stop now. She was slightly startled when he bit her tail, but it didn't hurt. It was just really quick and well done. Sorrelpaw padded over to where Waspfang had been and prepared to attack. He was bigger than her, of course, which meant she would need to jump high enough to leap over him. She took a step back to ready herself. Let's hope this goes well. Sorrelpaw began running towards Waspfang as fast as she could. She jumped when she was nearly in front of him, flying just high enough and far enough to land behind him. The she-cat swirled around to perform the next part. Her small mouth grabbed onto his tail. She bit and pulled her mentor's tail a little harder than intended, but not enough to leave a mark. Sorrelpaw realized her mistake and let go. "Sorry!" she replied quickly.
His fur was a bit ruffled from the bite, and his eyes flashed angrily. "Foxdung!" He cursed when she pulled his tail, but it didn't hurt too bad; it was mostly the surprise that caught him. "You have been performing messily this whole time! I said that you better be working your hardest today," his tone was malign, and his back was slightly arched in anger. "I am trying to be patient with you, but it's as if you can't learn anything. You might as well prepare to be a queen now, you'll never be a real warrior!"
He let out a bit of a snarl, pacing back and forth until he calmed himself down. "We're going back to camp. I want you to clean up any rotted prey and replace all the bedding in Copperwhisker's nest," his tone was still malicious, and his eyes were wide with fury, pupils small black slits that were alike to claws. He raised a paw as if to strike her, but took a heavy breath and set it down.
She didn't have anything to say. His demeanor had changed, becoming fierce and angered. It scared her, like it always did. His words cut her like claws. Is he right? Will I ever be a real warrior? She lashed her tail. I should have been more careful! Now he's furious with me and I have chores to do... Sorrelpaw kept her head low and didn't dare make eye contact with Waspfang. He looked like he was going to hit her, but luckily he didn't.
